How Botox works to reduce signs of aging

As we age, the natural muscle activity in our face can lead to the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin. Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the targeted muscles, reducing contractions and thus lessening the visibility of wrinkles, including brow frown and forehead lines. It can also help decrease sweating and minimize pore size.

Our skilled practitioners are dedicated to tailoring treatments to meet your specific facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. Discover how small adjustments can make a significant difference in your overall look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wondering if Botox injections are for you?

Here are some frequently asked questions, answered by our lead physician, Dr. Lisa Smaldone.

  • We use Jeaveau and Xeomin for our antiwrinkle and antiaging treatments.

  • For cosmetic purposes, Botox can be used to address fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), mouth, neck, and forehead. Botox can also be injected into the jawline for a more slender appearance or the chin to soften dimpling,

  • Botox is a neurotoxin, which means it works by blocking nerve signals to the muscle it is injected. Your skin appears smooth and unwrinkled because Botox prevents contracting in those injected areas. It also reduces sweating and decreases pore size.

  • Because Botox is performed using fine needles the procedure is relatively painless and does not require anesthesia.

  • The procedure takes 15-20 minutes depending on the area treated and you can get back to work and life the same day.

  • The results differ from patient to patient. But you will typically notice some effects 3-7 days post injection and the full effect within 2 weeks.

  • Again, it differs from patient to patient. And also depends on factors such as the area injected, the amount of neurotoxin used, your age, skin elasticity, and muscle thickness. But usually, you can expect results to last 3-6 months.

  • Botox is FDA-approved as a safe treatment for reversing lines and wrinkles. We do not recommend Botox for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neurological diseases. Ask our experts if you are a candidate for Botox.

  • The most common side effects include mild pain, mild swelling, slight bruising, and tenderness around the area of injection. These subside within 48 hours.

In some rare occasions, the treatment may relax nearby muscle groups causing temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelids. This may last for a few weeks but will resolve with time.

  • We recommend you not consume alcohol and/or stop taking blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Gingko Biloba, or Ginseng a week prior to treatment. This is to help minimize the potential side effects listed above. Please notify your provider if you are taking blood thinners of any type.

  • At La Vie, we are determined to help you look your best while still appearing natural. This is why our trained experts suggest treatments only based on your specific needs and facial anatomy.
